Neck Pain Treatment
If you suffer from chronic neck pain then, depending on the cause, you may benefit from non-surgical stem cell and/or regenerative medicine injections.
About Neck Pain
Neck pain is commonly caused by degenerative changes in the cervical spine, caused by minor injuries and repeated stress, which may not cause any pain or discomfort at the time of injury. Over time, these injuries and stress can culminate in cervical spine degeneration that causes neck pain. Neck pain can also be caused by acute injuries such as whiplash from car accidents.
Cervical spine treatments require both physician expertise and specialized equipment such as computed tomography (CT) scanners. Fortunately, you’ll find it all at Riordan Medical Institute. Below, we outline common neck pain causes and symptoms; our regenerative medicine options; highly specialized cervical/neck procedures; and common conditions treated at RMI.
Common Causes of Neck Pain
- Muscle Strain (Stiff Neck)
- Mechanical Neck Pain (Degenerative Disc, Arthritis)
Cervical Radiculopathy (Pinched Nerve)
- Spinal Stenosis (Narrowing of Spinal Canal)

Neck/Cervical Spine Procedures Include
Below are common neck/cervical spine procedures we perform at RMI. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Cervical Interlaminar Epidural Injection – A *regenerative biologic is injected into the cervical epidural space to reduce pain and inflammation. The epidural space surrounds the dura, which is a covering that protects the spinal cord and its nerves. This injection is performed from the back of the spine under X-Ray guidance using sterile technique. Neck, upper back pain or pain radiating down your arm may be treatable with this type of injection.
- Cervical Transforaminal Epidural Injections – A *regenerative biologic is injected into the cervical epidural space to reduce pain and inflammation. This injection is performed where the nerve exits the spine. Neck or upper back pain or pain radiating down your arm may be treatable with this type of injection.
- Cervical Facet Injections – A *regenerative biologic is injected into a cervical facet joint for patients with cervical spondylosis or neck arthritis. Hearing cracks and pops as well as pain in your neck, across the shoulders and also into the base of your skull can be caused by dysfunctional cervical facet joints.
- Cervical Paraspinal Injections – A *regenerative biologic is injected into the paraspinal muscles in the neck. Cervical paraspinal muscles are the two prominent muscles at the back of the neck that extend down the back on either side of the spine. Paraspinal injections are commonly used to treat chronic headaches, neck pain and pain across the shoulder blades.
- Cervical Interspinous and Alar Ligament Injections – A *regenerative biologic is injected into the cervical interspinous ligament, which runs between the spinous processes of two vertebrae. Patients who may have had trauma such as a car accident or fall with pain in the middle of the neck or midback may have injured the interspinous and other ligaments in this region. These ligaments are important for stability of the spine.
- Atlanto-occipital Joint (AO Joint) Injections – A *regenerative biologic is injected into the atlanto-occipital joint, which connects the skull to the first cervical vertebrae and aids in bending the neck forward and backward. Chronic neck pain and headaches may be signs of an AO joint problem. Whiplash is a common cause.
- Third Occipital Nerve Injections and Pulsed Radiofrequency Procedures – A *regenerative biologic is injected across the third occipital nerve, which supplies the certain cervical facet joints, certain neck muscles and some skin at the back of the head. In addition to injections, pulsed radiofrequency energy is introduced around the nerves. This energy changes the way the nerve transmits signals without generating high temperatures, which can damage nearby tissue. This type of pain is can be caused by whiplash, car wrecks, and other trauma. This is generally done in a series of procedures done over the course of a week.
- Greater/Lesser Occipital Nerve Injections and Pulsed Radiofrequency/ cryoablation Procedures – A *regenerative biologic is injected across the lesser and/or greater occipital nerve. Common symptoms of occipital nerve pain include shooting pain from the base of the head to the scalp on the side of the head, pain behind the eye and headaches. This energy changes the way the nerve transmits signals without generating high temperatures, which can damage nearby tissue. This is generally done in a series of procedures done over the course of a week.
