Stem Cell Therapy for Spine at RMI
If you suffer from chronic back pain then, depending on the cause, you may benefit from non-surgical stem cell injections or stem cell-enhanced surgery.
Can stem cells treat back pain?
A study published last year (2015) in the scientific journal Stem Cells entitled reported that patients suffering from chronic back pain due to degenerative disc disease who were treated by injecting their own bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) into their lumbar discs experienced significant pain reduction 12 months after treatment.
Percutaneous injection of autologous bone marrow concentrate significantly reduces lumbar discogenic pain through 12 months
CONCLUSION: Statistically significant improvement in pain scores and impairment was demonstrated in 21 of 26 patients, with the most dramatic improvement in patients with higher CFU-F concentrations. Rehydration of the discs in eight of twenty patients according to MRI in conjunction with sustained pain relief through 12 months represents promise for the use of this regenerative medicine approach.
What makes stem cell therapy at RMI different?
- Precision Fluoroscopic C-Arm Guidance for bone marrow harvesting with C-Arm and/or ultrasound guidance for treatment injections
- Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) with Vertical Axis Centrifuge
- Amniotic Tissue Product Developed By Dr. Riordan
At RMI, we are augmenting BMAC with a pliable tissue allograft (transplant) developed by Dr. Riordan. It is derived from human placental amnion, which functions as a biologic structural matrix to facilitate and enhance tissue healing and repair. It contains 108 different growth factors including more than 10 times the amount of WNT-4 and more than 60 times the amount of prostaglandin as competing products.
Prostaglandin inhibits inflammation, which occurs after injury and marks the beginning of the healing process. The faster we can tame this inflammation, the sooner the body can move on to the next phase of healing, regeneration.

Common back conditions treated at Riordan Medical Institute (RMI):
Below are common back conditions we treat at RMI as long as there is no peripheral nerve disfunction or leg pain other than back pain. If your condition is not listed, please contact us to see if you are a candidate.
- Annular Tears
- Degenerative Disc
- Chronic Paravertebral Muscle Atrophy
- Lumbar facet injury
- Back instability
- SI Joint Pain
- Sacroiliac joint syndrome
*Amniotic tissue is donated after normal, healthy births. Once it has been fully tested for infectious diseases, sterility and a few other things, the tissue is processed by using proprietary methods developed by Neil Riordan, PhD.
